Healthy Hair Essential Oil Hair Mask

In this post I want to go into a little more depth on what essential oils are good for hair in general and how they work. At the end I’ll also share a really good hair mask that may help with thinning hair making it more thick, prevent hair breakage and encourage hair growth.

In the past I’ve worried over thinning hair and hair loss in general. There were a few months that it was so bad I spoke to my doctor about and used a chemical laden foam to help my hair grow back. It was disgusting and I didn’t like using it. And to be honest I couldn’t tell if it worked at all.

I did my research and switched to an essential oil for hair growth and loss prevention hair tonic. My hair was healthier and shinier when using the hair tonic. To check out this hair tonic please read How to Grow Your Hair Naturally With Essential Oils.

Essential Oils for Hair Health

Rosemary Essential Oil For Hair Health

Our first essential oil is the ever so popular for hair repair is rosemary essential oil. You can find rosemary in tons of hair products on the market which only shows that everyone knows rosemary is great for hair. Rosemary is good for hair thinning and brittle hair that breaks off. It may assist with preventing graying hair as well.

How It Works

Rosemary helps with blood circulation that stimulates your hair follicles. It is helpful for clearing pores, which will reduce itchiness and scalp acne. Rosemary has many benefits including shining hair up, fighting dandruff, strengthening roots, and unclogging hair follicles. It will increase your hair’s volume which will lead to thicker hair. Rosemary is just an overall great essential oil for restoring your hairs health.

A caution on rosemary essential oil. Do not use around children ages ten and under.

Lavender Essential oil For Hair Health

Lavender not only scents your hair beautifully is has some of the same benefits of rosemary. It too helps prevent hair loss, improves hair growth, and helps with a dry and irritated scalp.

Why It Works

Why it works.  Lavender will moisturize your hair that will prevent breakage and damage in general. It has antimicrobial and antiseptic properties that help aid your scalp in preventing bacterial fungi. Lavender is very soothing to the skin as well.

Cedarwood Essential Oil for Hair Health

Cedarwood essential oil also prevents hair loss. It may treat dandruff and has been known to reverse alopecia areata a condition where you get patches of bald spots on your scalp. Cedarwood is great at balancing the production of oil (also known as sebum) on your scalp so it’s especially helpful if you have greasy hair.

How It Works

Because cedarwood stimulates the scalp it helps your hair grow faster and thicker. The balancing of oil production prevents overly greasy hair.

roman Chamomile Essential Oil for Hair Health

Roman chamomile essential oils is a perfect oil to add shine and luster to dull lifeless hair. It can also help eliminate dandruff and dermatitis (common as itchy dry skin).

How It Works

Roman chamomile is anti inflammatory which means it relieves itchy and dry scalp stopping dandruff and dermatitis in it’s tracks. This essential oil is also a protectant against environmental pollutants.

Peppermint Essential Oil for Hair Health

Peppermint essential oil strengthens roots and lessens hair loss.

How It Works

Peppermint essential oil increases circulation which prevents hair loss and improves hair growth. It revives hair follicles which equals hair growth.

A few cautions about peppermint essential oil. This essential oil may cause reduced milk supply in nursing mothers. Also avoid use if you have any of the following – atrial fibrillation disorder, cholestasis, G6PD deficient, and if you have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Peppermint essential oil is also not recommended to be used on children six and under.

Carrier Oils for Hair Health

A carrier oil is simply an “oil” that is vegetable based that “carries” the essential oil. You will want to dilute the essential oils to keep them from causing adverse reactions to your scalp.

Mixing essential oils with carrier oils is on way to make them go farther as well, meaning you’ll get the most use out of them by diluting essential oils in a carrier oil. In this recipe we use two carrier oils.

solid Coconut Oil for Hair Health

Coconut oil (not fractionated coconut oil, but the solid coconut oil) is a great carrier oil for hair. You may think that it will leave your hair greasy and excessively shiny but it won’t if you use it properly. Coconut oil has nourishing and moisturizing properties. It reduces hair breakage, conditions hair into smooth soft locks, makes dull hair shine again and eases hair frizz.

How It Works

It removes oil buildup on the scalp, preventing clogged follicles and pores, allowing better hair growth. Used properly it will nourish and moisturize hair making it shine and present a healthy head of hair.

Jojoba Oil for Health Hair

Jojoba carrier oil is a nourishing oil that has great benefits such as cleaning scalp and hair follicles.

How It Works

Jojoba oil dissolves build up that clogs hair follicles. Unclogged follicles makes hair grow in thicker and healthier.

Healthy Hair Essential Oil Hair Mask

Now that we know the best essential oils and carrier oil to use in our hair lets put them to work in a hair mask that will leave your hair full, lush and healthy.

This is a one time use mask, meaning you make just enough to use for one application. I have not made this for multiple applications so I don’t know how long it will hold up for if you store it for later use.

Healthy Hair Mask Recipe

In this recipe we will use coconut oil, jojoba oil and 30 drops of essential oils.

You will need:

  • 2 Tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 Tablespoon jojoba oil
  • 30 drops of essential oils of your choice from what we previously discussed in this post.

Here is what I use when I make this.

  • 20 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 5 drops lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops cedarwood essential oil.

If you don’t like the smell of rosemary try:

  • 15 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops of cedarwood essential oil
  • 5 drops of rosemary essential oil

Really, any mix of the essential oil listed will work. I stay away from roman chamomile because it is a more expensive essential oil to use. I added it because it is amazing at adding shine and luster to hair, so if that’s your goal be sure to include it in the mixture of essential oils.

how to Make Healthy Hair Mask

Mix the essential oils with the two carrier oils thoroughly using your fingers or a spoon. Apply to scalp and hair. Massage into ends and onto scalp for best results. Comb through and leave on for 15 to 30 minutes. You may also wrap head in a towel and leave on overnight. Wash as normal with shampoo. I use a clarifying shampoo that works great at removing the coconut oil mixture.

Wrapping it Up

For me having healthy hair is important. I don’t want it to fall out or have split ends or breakage. So using this hair mask and the hair tonic I referenced to at the beginning of the post work well for what I want to accomplish.
