A Short History

Lavender essential oil has a long history. It was used by the Egyptians for mummification and as an aromatic perfume. The Romans also used this amazing essential oil for bathing and cooking. In Medieval and Renaissance France, women used it to scent laundry. Lavender is also found in the Bible, but by the name “spikenard.” Today lavender is well known in the aromatherapy world and used by many. 

Benefits of Lavender Essential Oil

There are two main ways to use lavender, inhaling through the nose and topically on the skin. Lavender essential oil can be used for the health of your body and mind. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-depressant, anti-septic, and anti-bacterial properties. With all its versatile ways to be used, you’ll want to keep plenty of this essential oil on hand. Lavender Essential Oil Uses

Skin Issues

Lavender is gentle and clean. Its anti-inflammatory property makes is great for skin issues such as acne, eczema, scars, burns, bug bites and itchy skin. It may help minimize wrinkles as well. 

To use for skin issues, add two drops lavender essential oil to 1 tablespoon unscented lotion or a carrier oil of choice and apply to affected area. Repeat daily or as needed. 

You can soften dry chapped lips by adding two drops of lavender oil to coconut oil or carrier oil of choice and apply to lips. 

For cuts and burns apply lavender essential oil directly to a cotton ball and dab on affected area. 

To ease bug bites and bee stings, apply 1-2 drops lavender essential oil to a cotton ball and apply to affected area. 

To sooth sunburn mix 2-3 drops of lavender oil into aloe vera gel and gently smooth over affected area. 

For stretch marks and diaper rash mix 2-3 drops of lavender essential oil into unscented lotion or carrier oil of choice and apply to affected area. 

Lavender essential oil can also help with fungal infections and yeast. Dilute 4 drops of lavender essential oil in a 10ml bottle of carrier oil and apply to affected areas. 

Respiratory Health

Lavender essential oil may help fight coughs, asthma, whooping cough, sinus congestion, bronchitis, and laryngitis.

To assist in flu like symptoms, cough, runny nose, and congestion diffuse 3-4 drops lavender essential oil in an ultrasonic diffuser such as this one. You may also diffuse through a personal inhaler such as this. To apply topically add 2-4 drops lavender essential oil to 10 ml roller bottle and apply to neck, chest and back of neck. 

For nausea or motion sickness diffuse 3-4 drops of lavender essential oil in an ultrasonic diffuser. You can also diffuse through a personal inhaler for car rides. 

Lavender essential oil is a natural antihistamine and may be used to lesson symptoms of allergies. You can diffuse or dilute 3-4 drops of lavender essential oil with 10 ml of carrier oil and rub around nasal passages to inhale for relief.

 

Pain

For headaches and migraines dilute 4 drops of lavender essential oil into 10 ml rollerball bottle and massage into temples and back of neck. 

Ease pain from muscle sprains, joint pain, backaches, menstrual cramps, and other minor pain like symptoms massage 2-3 drops of lavender essential oil mixed with 1 tablespoon carrier oil of choice. 

Insomnia and sleep issues

Lavender is a very calming and relaxing oil. It may help with insomnia and other sleep issues. Simply diffuse 4 drops of lavender essential oil before bed in an ultrasonic diffuser. You may also drop a few drops of lavender onto your pillow or breathe directly from your hands or the bottle. 

Hair loss and Dandruff

Lavender is a great oil for hair. It provides anti-inflammatory properties that will help hair follicles. To use add 2-3 drops of lavender essential oil to enough shampoo for one use. Shampoo as usual. You can also use my hair tonic that contains lavender and many other hair healthy essential oils that will not only help prevent hair loss but will help it grow.

Insect Repellant

Lavender is great at keeping mosquitoes from bugging you. Simple combine 3 drops lavender essential oil with a teaspoon witch hazel and apply to exposed skin. You can also make this into a spray bottle. 

Sanitize and Disinfect

Lavender has anti-septic, anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties that will help disinfect surfaces of your home. Mix 1 cup each white vinegar and distilled water with 16 drops lavender essential oil. Mix well and spray surfaces. Wipe down with clean cloth. 

Anxiety and Depression

Lavender is a natural sedative so not only will it help you sleep but it can calm feelings of anxiety, worry and mild depression. Lavender can also help stabilize your mood and improve concentration. Diffuse 3-4 drop of essential oil in an ultrasonic diffuser such as this one or add 15 drops of lavender essential oil to the wick of a personal inhaler and breathe through your nose 1-3 times as needed. 

Stomach Discomforts

Lavender essential oil may also help with stomach discomforts such as indigestion, colic, and vomiting. You can diffuse or apply topically. To diffuse add 4 drops lavender essential oil to an ultrasonic diffuser. To apply topically mix 3-4 drops lavender essential oil with carrier oil of choice and apply to abdomen. Do not use on infants.
