I personally don’t use essential oils ON my dogs, but I do diffuse around them. I make sure that any essential oil I diffuse is dog safe. There are so many different essential oils out there I’m sure you’ll find a few that you can make into a blend that’s safe for your furry friend.

Now just because its dog friendly doesn’t mean you dog will love it too. It’s always best to test it out first, meaning to watch your dog carefully to be sure he’s not having issues with the oils or getting upset over it. Dogs have sensitive noses and may display a variety of ways that they are uncomfortable with a scent.

Observe your dog, see if he or she is acting strangely such as going outside more than usual. Be sure your pet can leave the room you are diffusing in.  This allows him to take a break from the scents you are diffusing. If they are leaving the room or asking to go out more often than usual may could mean that the scents are too strong for your dog, or they may not like the scent. You could try using less. They may also rub their faces/noses on something or whine, pant or just generally seem uncomfortable.

Another option, is to use one essential oil at a time. Diffuse one of the safe for dogs essential oils from the list below at a time. Observe your dog to be sure they don’t get upset or negatively react to the oil. Once you’ve tried all the oils, you’ll be able to combine the ones that don’t bother your dog.

Dog Safe Essential Oil Recipes

Citrus Burst

  • 2 drops Bergamot
  • 2 drops Grapefruit
  • 2 drops Lemon
  • 2 drops Orange

Wake Me UP

  • 5 drops Coffee
  • 3 drops Sweet Orange

Bye-Bye Doggie Odor

  • 4 drops lemon
  • 4 drops tea tree

Sweet Nothings

  • 4 drops Clary Sage
  • 2 drops Frankincense
  • 2 drops Lavender

Deep Woods

  • 4 drops Cedarwood
  • 3 drops Cypress
  • 1 drop Patchouli

To use add recommended amount of water to ultrasonic diffuser followed by drops of essential oil. I do not recommend doubling the drops for a 500ml diffuser because this will most likely be too strong for your dogs due to their highly sensitive noses. If you find the recipes above are to strong for your dogs, reduce the drops by one each oil.

Conclusion

SO now you can diffuse essential oils (from this list) safely around your pups. Keeping your dogs safe should be a top priority when diffusing essential oils. Is there an oil you wish to know is safe for dogs? Please let me know in the comments.
