Festive Holiday Diffuser Blends for Your Holiday Gatherings

With the Holiday season upon us I know everyone wants their house to smell like seasonal tidings. Many of the common seasonal essential oils such as cinnamon bark, nutmeg, allspice, and clove contain constituents that may be unsafe for some people.

Lets take a further look at these essential oils. Then I’ll give you several alternative Holiday Diffuser Blends.

It is very popular to use Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Clove and Allspice for holiday cooking. Theres something festive about the warm aroma of Christmas cooking baking. Using these essential oils do mimic that fragrance, but unfortunately Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Clove and Allspice essential oils contain constituents that have unsafe possibilities. Read on to see what each essential oils safety issues are when inhaling by diffusing.

Cinnamon Bark and Leaf

Cinnamon Bark and Leaf is a blood thinner and those taking blood thinning medications (this includes aspirin) may be at risk when inhaling. Cinnamon Bark is unsafe for pregnant and nursing women and unsafe for dogs. Leaf can be used with pregnant and nursing mother and is dog safe. You want to take this into considerations with people visiting your home during the holidays when you are diffusing these essential oils.

Nutmeg

Nutmeg is carcinogenic, meaning that has the possibility to cause cancer. It is also psychotropic. Meaning is can possibly affect someone’s mental state, their emotions and behavior. Nutmeg is not safe for children, pregnant women, pets, or the elderly. It is recommended to not be used at all by anyone.

Clove

Clove essential oil is also a blood thinner and should not be inhaled or used topically by those taking blood thinning medication such as aspirin. It should not be used before or after surgery. Clove is not safe for dogs. Please use caution when diffusing clove.

Allspice

Allspice, also known as pimento berry, is also a blood thinner and may have contraindications when used before or after surgery. It is also a carcinogenic essential oil. Because of these issues, Allspice is not recommended to be used by anyone.

what do you do if you want these aromas in your home during the holidays?

The solution is simple. Add the whole spices to your crock pot with some water and let simmer. You could also do this on a stove top in a pot of water. Add a cinnamon stick, a few dashes of nutmeg and a couple of cloves. Many people also add citruses such as an orange peel to the pot.

Holiday Candy

  • 3 drops Lemon
  • 2 drops Ginger
  • 1 drop Vanilla

Candy Cane

  • 4 drops Spearmint
  • 3 drops Vanilla

Holiday Cheer

  • 3 drops Ylang Ylang
  • 2 drops Mandarin (You could substitute sweet orange or tangerine also)
  • 1 drop Vanilla

Spiced Citrus

  • 2 drops Ginger
  • 2 drops Black Pepper
  • 2 drops Sweet Orange

Cozy Cabin

  • 3 drops Bergamot
  • 3 drops Cedarwood (atlas)

Holiday Spirit

  • 3 drops Cypress
  • 2 drops Ylang Ylang
  • 2 drops Chamomile (Roman)

Holiday Traditions

  • 2 drops Frankincense
  • 2 drops Sweet Orange
  • 2 drops Spearmint

Winter Forrest

  • 3 drops Cypress
  • 3 drops Cedarwood (Atlas)
  • 2 drops Black Pepper

To diffuse in your ultrasonic diffuser, add the recommended amount of water followed by the drops required of essential oils. If you have a large diffuser 300-500 milliliters feel free to double the recipe. Run 10 to 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off.
