Cypress Essential Oil- A Brief History
The cypress tree has been around for more than 200 million years. It is referred to be a medicinal tree. Its dried leaves are used for a variety of ailments. In ancient civilizations the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians admired the tall cone shaped cypress trees. They believed the trees were significant due to their height and pointed tops. This was thought as to ease the passage of their dearly departed into heaven. Because of this the cypress tree is one of the oldest symbols of grief and mourning. The Latin name, sempervirens, means “always flourishing”.
Where is Cypress Grown and Harvested?
The Cypress tree, Cupressus sempervirens, is grown in Spain, France, Italy, and Morocco. It is harvested from the needles and twigs of young cypress trees. It is then steam distilled to produces a pale-yellow essential oil. Cypress has a spicy woodsy scent that is clean and fresh.
Cypress Essential Oil Uses and Benefits
Cypress essential oil is helpful in supporting a healthy respiratory system. These include bronchitis, whooping cough, congestion, and pneumonia.
This oil is also great for the skin, it can help with easing spider veins, eczema, psoriasis and treat bacterial infections.
Cypress may help with spasms and cramps, especially helpful for menstrual cramps.
It is great as a deodorant, both for the home and body.
Cypress essential oil may help kill surface and airborne germs.
May relieve nerve pain.
It can assist with cuts and minor wounds.
Cypress essential oil emotional benefits include helping with grief and mourning, as its history suggests.
Promotes circulation and blood flow when used topically.
Is Cypress Safe to Use?
Cypress Essential Oil is one of the safest essential oils out there. It is a good substitute for other unsafe essential oil commonly used for respiratory issues, especially in young children. This essential oil is safe for all to use (not recommended for infants). It is safe for pregnant and nursing mothers. Safe for dogs, but not cats.
