ZZ Plant. Also know as Zamioculcas zamiifoliam hence the name “ZZ”. This thing can go without water for a good month. It grows individual stems out of the dirt with long green leaves going up the stem. I love it. It sits perfectly on the ledge inside my front door.

Peace Lily. This was the first plant I bought when we moved into our house. It can grow in dirt or water and occasionally produces a white flower that resembles a leaf. It can be very dramatic when it needs water. Just overnight it can get slouchy. Which means it needs water. Peace Lilies are very forgiving plant, even with all the drama, and just need to be watered regularly to keep their leaves upright.

Aloe Vera. Now I don’t use mine for medicinal reasons as so many others do. I love the way they look. Aloes makes me feel like I’m in a tropical environment. I’ve over watered mine before and it turn a little yellow, but for some reason it always looks good again. It sits in my kitchen window and seems to love the amount or lack of light it gets there. I’m afraid to move it in case it doesn’t like the new place I put it!

Ponytail Palm.  I have two of these guys and they seem to do best crowded in their pots. They literally look like a ponytail with long strands of “hair”. They don’t need as much water and never give me any drama because they always look the same. I assume I’m doing something right with these guys.

Crown of Thorns.   I have had a few issues with this guy. Mostly because I’ve not figured out the exact amount of water he needs. He is very tall, not bushy like I’ve seen of others like it. It can go a while without water as well, but I’ve noticed that if I let it dry out and then water it, it produces these pretty little pink flowers.

Bonus Easy Plants to keep Alive

Grape Ivy. I’ve actually tried to kill this one over the winter. It, like the peace lily needs lots of water and can get a little weak and slouchy. Over half the leaves had died on the thing this past winter. This spring when I pulled it outside (it’s about three feet tall on its stakes) and pulled off the dead leaves there was still a section thriving. I rewound the leaves around the stake, and it filled out and became bushy again this summer. Grape Ivy’s grow very fast if you let them.
